Toto의 Africa 입니다. 이 곡은 1982년 발표되었고, Toto IV 앨범에 실려 있습니다.
이 곡은 '토토'의 가장 대표곡으로 알려져 있지요. 1983년 2월 빌보드 싱글 차트에서 1위를 기록했네요.

유치환의 시 '생명의 서' 중에,.
'나의 지식이 독한 회의를 구하지 못하고 ... (중략) ... 저 머나먼 아라비아의 사막으로 나는 가자..."
(1938) 라는 구절이 있습니다.

여기서 "아라비아의 사막"에 해당하는 유사한 의미를 지니는 공간이 Toto의 Africa에서는 'Afica'인 것이지요.

왜 아프리카를 동경했던 것일까요... 실지로 아프리카 대륙의 면적은 어마어마한데요.

* Toto는 1977년 결성된 미국 메인스트림 락밴드로 당대에 가장 유명하고 경험많은 세션 뮤지션(session musician)들로 구성되었습니다. 이들은 1980년대 앨범의 상업적 성공을 이어갔습니다.
Toto는 자신들의 18번째 앨범인 "Falling In Between Live'를 2007년 8월에 발매하였는데, 2008년 투어를 끝으로 밴드는 공식적으로 해체하였습니다. 1977년부터 2008년까지 약 32년을 활동한 셈이 되네요.

1982년 발매된 Toto IV 앨범은 큰 성공을 거뒀는데, "Rosanna", "Africa", "I Won't Hold You Back" 등의 곡이 빌보드 Top 10에 진입해네요. 특히 Africa는 잘 알려져 있고, 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 곡입니다.

음악적으로 정교하고 완벽한 연주기법을 바탕으로, 철학적으로도 의미깊은 내용들을 대중적으로 쉽게 감성적으로 선사했다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
