Gloomy Sunday는 헝가리 피아니스트, 작곡가였던 Rezso Seress가 1933년에 Laszlo Javor의 헝가리 시에 곡을 붙여
발표한 곡입니다.  많은 음악가들이 이 노래를 불렀지만, Billie Holiday가 부른 곡이 유명하며 1941년 큰 히트를 기록했습니다.

Heather Nova의 앨범 South에 담긴 이 버전은 2001년에 발표되었습니다.
2000년에는 Sarah Brightman이 불러서 발표하기도 했습니다.

이 노래는 '헝가리 자살 노래'(hungarian suicide song)라고 오랫동안 애칭되어 불려지고 있는데,
2차대전 전후의 암울한 시기에 많은 이들의 자살과 관련되었다는 평가를 받고 있으나, 확실한 근거는 없다고 합니다.
이 곡을 작곡한 Rezso Seress도 1968년 69세 생일 직후 일요일, 그의 작은 아파트에서 투신하여 생을 마감하여,
다시 한 번 노래의 악명이 높아졌고, New York Times는 당시에 이를 대서특필했다고 합니다.
